Abstract
- The emergency airlift for Rwandan refugees begins today. Large cargo planes are en route to Goma in eastern Zaire.
- In 48 hours, more than 500,000 people have crossed the border between Rwanda and Zaire. Humanitarian organizations now fear a full-blown food crisis.
- An emergency airlift to rescue hundreds of thousands of Rwandan refugees. The first UN-equipped plane is scheduled to land today in Goma, Zaire. Its cargo holds include blankets and containers of water.
- Fourteen planes are expected to participate in the mission. Trucks loaded with food have also left Bukavu in southern Zaire, heading for Goma.
- The UN, criticized by some humanitarian organizations for its delayed intervention, is calling for more funding. Some 530 million francs to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
