Abstract
- The confrontation between the two ethnic groups of Rwanda now seems inevitable even if the situation seems calmer these last hours in Kigali the capital.
- Several hundred foreigners are leaving Rwanda today. Despite a calm night in Kigali, French, Germans, Belgians, Swiss and a few Americans chose to pack up. The northeast of the country is indeed still the scene of violent fighting.
- As for the population, it is especially beginning in Kigali to perceive the harmful effects of the conflict: prices have tripled in five days. Beans and bananas, two basic elements of Rwandan food, are becoming difficult to find in the stalls of the capital where everyone is trying to get supplies despite the total curfew decreed by the authorities.
- The diplomats in place generally believe that with the arrival of Belgian, French and Zairian paratroopers, the rebels had to mourn their desire to seize strategic places. The conflict is therefore likely to be long.
- 250 Germans will be repatriated from Rwanda. This morning arrived in Paris the first French people who have left the country since the beginning of the clashes.
- At the stopover in Nairobi, none of the 232 passengers on the Air France flight from Kigali dared to get off. For 93 French people who arrived in Roissy that night, the anguish of the last few days still outweighed the relief. A French national: "It was shooting a little from all sides with heavy weapons. And with different combat points".
- Other French people are due to arrive this afternoon from Rwanda on another Air France flight. But for the returnees that night, the evacuation was a bit rushed.
