Abstract
- Today's news is also, and once again, about Rwanda. Thousands of refugees are crossing the border into Zaire. France is asking the United Nations to convene the Security Council this evening.
- Three days ago [July 11], Edouard Balladur was at the UN to request the rotation of French troops. Today, the government is urgently requesting a Security Council meeting.
- There are several reasons for this: first, the human catastrophe unfolding on the ground. Hundreds of thousands of refugees are taking the road to exile every day. Here in Goma, Zaire, a crowd wanders, uprooted and soon to be starving.
- According to Doctors Without Borders, 30,000 refugees cross the border every hour.
- The ICRC is now trying to find new sites to accommodate the refugees. In the coming days, there will be nearly a million of them in the country.
- Faced with this situation, France is therefore calling on the UN to mobilize the international community and is once again appealing to all humanitarian organizations. It is also demanding an immediate ceasefire.
- Finally, a last appeal is being made to Rwanda's neighboring countries to try to find a way to a political settlement.
