Abstract
- The civil war that is taking place in Rwanda does not end. Horror, misfortune; with each passing day, hundreds of deaths are added to the endless list of innocent victims of an ethnic war. Massacres, abuses, summary executions, looting, exodus.
- A few kilometers from Kigali, a hospital. The last may be in operation. Section of orphans: here there are a hundred, in the country thousands. Orphans are likely to be one of the major problems in the coming years in Rwanda.
- Most of these young children were found dead. They keep wounds of a rare savagery on their bodies, traces of machetes or shot, and have seen their family massacred.
- Outside, the villages of straw around Kigali offer the same images of desolation and apocalypse: massacres carefully organized before the indifference of the eyes of the whole world. 200,000 dead in four weeks and inert diplomacy.
- Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the UN Secretary General visiting Paris yesterday [May 11], recommends sending 5,000 blue helmets. The United States last night proposed to the UN the possibility of creating a protection zone.
- While the soldiers of the Rwandan Patriotic Front go down towards Kigali, the refugees go up towards the North in Tanzania. At least 250,000 refugees in the camps where everything is lacking. A deplorable situation that is deteriorating day by day.
