Abstract
- The war in Rwanda: the UN Security Council tries to negotiate a truce between the government forces and the rebels. In the meantime, after the departure of the Belgian and also French blue helmets, the fighting, or more precisely the massacres, resumed. br/>
- Kigali airport, a strategic point in the war in Rwanda, fell this morning after the departure last night of the last Belgian and French paratroopers participating in the evacuation operations of foreign nationals.
- The rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front have been pounding the runways and installations of the airport since dawn, in which some 450 blue helmets from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda who have not yet been evacuated are said to have retreated.
- Before leaving Kigali, the Belgian paratroopers carried out this last patrol in the city yesterday [April 15] at the end of the day to make sure that their mission was over and that there were no white people left to evacuate from the Rwandan capital. Streets almost deserted but full of risk, strewn with corpses. Ethnic violence between the Hutu majority and the Tutsi minority that resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries in one week.
- In this chaos, the Belgian paratroopers succeeded in extremis last night before leaving Rwanda to save about fifty Tutsi children who had taken refuge in an orphanage threatened by the soldiers of the presidential guard with a Hutu majority. Last images of hope before the continuation of the murderous madness that ignited Rwanda.
