Abstract
- The violence in Kigali even if, for the first time, the representatives of the army and the rebels met. The fighting is still bloody in the capital of Rwanda where there are hardly any Westerners left.
- In a few hours Rwanda will be on its own. The last foreign nationals left Kigali overnight. The departure of the 450 Belgian blue helmets is imminent. For Brussels, the peacekeeping operation in Rwanda is now irrelevant.
- Last attempt by the Rwandan army to block the last Belgian soldiers at Kigali airport, as if to delay the inevitable face-to-face with the rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front.
- Westerners abandon Kigali strewn with corpses where the massacres continue. Never, according to the Red Cross, has the Rwandan capital experienced such murderous madness. As the tales of horror begin to flow. A white man testifies: "They went into the church, closed the door and started firing grenades and machine guns from 6:30 in the morning until evening".
- After a week of fighting the rebels have the choice between two options: either take Kigali by storm, or negotiate their entry into a government of national unity. A small glimmer of hope yesterday [April 15] under the aegis of the UN: a delegation from the Patriotic Front met with representatives of the army. No truce has been concluded but a new appointment has been made for today.
