Abstract
- Virtually all the French have now left Kigali. The French paratroopers should withdraw from the city fairly quickly. Rwanda plunges into civil war and nothing has so far stopped the massacres between the country's two ethnic groups.
- They are already wounded but we finish them off with great blows from sticks. Hate, anarchy and death have reigned supreme over the city for four days. Corpses lie all over the streets. The massacres of Tutsi by Hutu civilians and by soldiers of the regular army have already caused several thousand deaths. Testimonies of atrocities are multiplying and the killing continues: this morning, the fall of a shell on a hospital left 27 dead and a hundred wounded.
- Tonight almost all of the French in Rwanda have been evacuated, 620 in total. Some religious and some civilians chose to stay. The first 43 returnees arrived last night [April 10] in Roissy.
- The fighting between the regular army, dominated by the Hutu, and the Rwandan Patriotic Front, with a Tutsi majority, will further intensify: two Tutsi battalions sent as reinforcements have arrived at the gates of Kigali. A French officer advised journalists to leave town. The massacre is likely to continue without witnesses.
