Abstract
- Since this morning hundreds of Europeans have been fleeing the hell of Rwanda. French, Belgians, Americans are evacuated by road and by air. The first French are expected tonight in Paris. On the spot the massacres continue.
- First images of the war between Hutu and Tutsi, it was yesterday [April 9] in Mulindi in the north of the country, at the headquarters of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, the armed movement of the Tutsi. Here, the fighting takes the form of real trench warfare.
- But in Kigali, the capital, Hutus continue to massacre Tutsi civilians with the help of the regular army. According to the Red Cross, the fighting has already caused several thousand deaths. Corpses litter the streets of the city, as confirmed by this French priest. Father Pierre Jault: "They are drunk with blood. Now they ask people for cards to see their ethnicity on them. I saw corpses on the road! The people who had taken refuge in the church, we took them out of the church, we killed them".
- This afternoon, the French army intensified the evacuation of French people from Kigali. By mid-afternoon, 246 of them had actually been able to leave Rwanda. According to the Minister for Cooperation Michel Roussin, the complete evacuation of the 600 people in the French community should be completed this evening.
