In his book Le Monde, un contre-pouvoir? (ed. L'Esprit frappeur, October 1999, p. 113), Jean-Paul Gouteux observes that Jean Hélène is not the only one in the newspaper Le Monde to take up ethnicist rhetoric: "In addition to the caricatural schematizations of a Decraene and journalists of this vein, ethnicist ideology is insidiously embedded there. For example, in "Overcoming Fear in Rwanda" (Le Monde July 27, 1994), Jean-Pierre Langellier feels obliged to point to the massacres of Tutsi families in 1959, 1963 and 1990-1993 in Rwanda as 'inter-communal killings'. The reader who ignores the history of Rwanda does not know who massacres whom. This is obviously not wrong. But when we know that all the propaganda of Hutu Power is based on the victimization of Hutu, there is a risk of being mistaken, of confusing victims and executioners. The ethnic groups being posed as an unsurpassable bio-sociological 'reality', it is also necessary to accept the clichés which accompany them, the Tutsi perfidy as the eternal victimization of the Hutu. A victimization which, therefore, leads to the denial of the genocide.".
