Abstract
- Tens of thousands of dead, tens of thousands of refugees: this is the result of the terrible and appalling civil war which is devastating Rwanda. Horror and terror.
- Corpses, in the water, on the road, everywhere. In one month, the civil war in Rwanda has killed more than 100,000 people, perhaps 200,000, and the fighting is still going on. It is a fight to the death between two parties, but especially between two ethnic groups: the rebels of the RPF, the Rwandan Patriotic Front, with a Tutsi majority, and the provisional government led by the Hutu.
- The civilian population is trying to escape the massacres. On the roads, columns of refugees try to reach neighboring countries. A massive exodus: 250,000 Rwandans have already found refuge in Tanzania. This is where they arrived, an improvised camp a few kilometers from the border.
- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees calls for an emergency airlift. Sanitary conditions are catastrophic and already famine threatens. But humanitarian organizations also have another fear, that of seeing a resurgence within this camp of ancestral rivalries between Hutu and Tutsi.
