Abstract
- In Rwanda, the situation is worsening daily: with over 1.5 million refugees, humanitarian organizations are overwhelmed. Aid is trickling in. Five to ten times more resources are needed to help the population.
- In Kigali, Rwanda's new leaders are consolidating their power. Yesterday [July 19], Pastor Bizimungu and his government were sworn in. The new Hutu president pledged to restore peace.
- But the end of the fighting does not mean a return to normal life for the millions of Rwandans who have fled their country. In the refugee camps in Zaire, humanitarian catastrophe is imminent.
- Here in Goma, men are fighting for food. Dysentery, dehydration, and perhaps soon famine are ravaging these refugee camps.
- In Goma, over a million people are trying to survive. Humanitarian organizations are overwhelmed. Yesterday [July 19], cargo ships chartered by the UN landed at Goma airport, bringing some food supplies.
- But these supplies are only temporary. The exodus continues. 400,000 new refugees began entering Zaire yesterday. Tomorrow, perhaps more. Nothing seems able to deter them from fleeing their country.
