- "We are all responsible for the genocide", this is how Boutros-Ghali, the UN Secretary General, refers to the situation in Rwanda. Incredibly terrible situation.
- Seven weeks of civil war and bloody fighting. Estimates that sometimes state 500,000 dead. Tonight the UN condemns the carnage in Rwanda and opens an investigation into the killings. The Human Rights Commission meeting in Geneva has just adopted a resolution to this effect: a special rapporteur has been appointed to investigate on the spot.
- In recent days, more and more voices have been raised stigmatizing the indifference of the international community. Rwanda abandoned by the world is also the personal sentiment expressed today by the UN Secretary General. Boutros Boutros-Ghali: "We are all responsible for this failure. Not only the great powers but also African governments, NGOs, the entire international community. It is a real genocide".
- But even good intentions are difficult to impose on the ground. The United Nations special envoy is continuing his talks with the two conflicting parties. He tries to make them accept the deployment of new blue helmets and to obtain a ceasefire.
- Meanwhile, fighting continues between government forces and those of the Rwandan Patriotic Front. Refugees are pouring in by the tens of thousands into makeshift camps and a handful of aid workers are struggling to save a few human lives.
