Abstract
- The situation is getting bogged down in Rwanda where government forces and the Rwandan Patriotic Front are fighting for control of the capital Kigali. The RPF, which reportedly controls nearly half of the country, captured a camp occupied by government forces in the Bugesera region about 30 kilometers south of the capital.
- There are more than 15,000 refugees in Kigali. They fled their homes to escape massacres and bombardments. But again they found the horror.
- The war between the Tutsi forces of the RPF, who are besieging the capital (they would control half of the country) and these Hutu militias who have armed themselves and who are also increasing their abuses.
- The war with its procession of summary executions. Nearly 100 Rwandan members of Doctors Without Borders were murdered in one month, sometimes even inside hospitals.
- 200,000 dead since April 6, "an unimaginable human tragedy" commented a UN official. The UN, which is still awaiting a decision on whether to strengthen its mission there for strictly humanitarian purposes. The Security Council is in fact debating the deployment of 5,500 blue helmets in Rwanda.
