John Philpot is a lawyer who defended alleged perpetrators of the Tutsi genocide at the ICTR, including Jean-Paul Akayesu, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2001 for the crime of genocide and whose judgment is considered a legal reference to confirm the reality of genocide. On the lawyer's website (now inaccessible), one could read in particular this: "Me Philpot is convinced that a significant number of defendants in international criminal law, and particularly at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, are fundamentally innocent, having been targeted by the often biased Prosecutor for political reasons. It is imperative to take these issues to the courts as well as the general public forums".
