Title
L'opération Turquoise, qui s'achève aujourd'hui, n'a peut-être été qu'une brève accalmie dans l'horreur
Abstract
- A very confused situation on the border between Rwanda and Zaire: the Zairian authorities are blocking all passage of Rwandan refugees. They are still trying to flee their country. During this time, the last French soldiers of Operation Turquoise leave Rwanda. 500 of them will remain folded up in Zaire.
- French soldiers leave Rwanda with a smile. Several hundred of them will continue to provide a rear base in Zaire But this afternoon, there will not be a single one left on Rwandan territory.
- The panic begins to take on worrying proportions: Hutu refugees, stranded in Rwanda by the closure of the Zairian border, attempted this morning to storm the bridge over the Rusizi river. The Ethiopian peacekeepers who replace the French in this sector are overwhelmed by this fear which makes the refugees aggressive. Obviously, the UNAMIR peacekeepers do not inspire more confidence. Operation Turquoise, which ends today, may therefore have been only a brief lull in horror.
- The border between Rwanda and Zaire should be reopened this afternoon, an official from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said.
