Abstract
- According to the humanitarian organization Médecins sans frontières Belgium, 80,000 Rwandan refugees have been killed since mid-July in camps in Zaire. In these camps, dysentery unfortunately took over from cholera. And for many doctors, the worst is yet to come.
- Not all water supplies cause this kind of incident, but they are more and more frequent. In the city of Goma, the tension has escalated: the Zairians are fighting with the Rwandans for drinking water. Question of survival for each other. After cholera, dysentery begins to affect the population and the disorganization facilitates the transmission of the disease. With their feet in dirty and polluted water, these women and children wait hours for a jerry can.
- And Lake Kivu still attracts the poorest who do not receive water. They condemn themselves. But what else to do when the choice is between dying of thirst or of dysentery?
- In Mugunga camp, mortality is increasing once again. 60,000 people crowd together in indescribable hygienic conditions and are threatened by dysentery. Food and water, even purified, are immediately contaminated. The volcanic stone prevents any construction of latrines. And once again the weakest succumb. Living conditions are deteriorating.
- It is true that the former government army does not facilitate the work of international organizations: it still prevents the return of refugees to Rwanda.
- The fight against dysentery is one of the most difficult: the current bacillus is resistant to all drugs and intensive care. The diagnosis for these children who suffer from malnutrition and diarrhea is pessimistic: five have already died.
