Abstract
- In Rwanda, the first American soldiers arrived this morning in Kigali to help rehabilitate the airport of the capital. For the moment, this is only a contingent of 60 soldiers.
- The French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur landed earlier in Goma accompanied by the Ministers of Defense, François Léotard, of Cooperation, Michel Roussin, and of Humanitarian Action, Lucette Michaux-Chevry. He will visit Operation Turquoise and the refugee camps.
- After cholera, dysentery now strikes them and doctors point out that this disease is much more difficult to cure. During the month of July, Zaire had to accept 1,500,000 refugees. A shock he was not prepared for.
- The Rwandan refugees who escaped cholera have in any case passed through the lightening filter of the Zairian army. Refugee: "The Zairian military ruined us 100%. They stole everything they could steal from us".
- Officially, compassion and self-pity are required. But in several places the exasperation is noticeable. The Rwandan refugees, for heating, have deforested the city. They brought the epidemic. In short, some have trouble with the great African solidarity.
- But to get back, you need help. And some Zairians know that Westerners, too, are not always up to the task. A Zairian: "We must ensure their safety to return home. That's all!".
