Abstract
- In Rwanda, hundreds of thousands of refugees have been piling up for days in the city of Goma, on the border between Rwanda and Zaire. To help them, humanitarian organizations are setting up urgently. They are a little outdated it must be said, because every day dozens if not hundreds of refugees die of hunger, thirst and disease.
- On the road from Goma to the camp located further north, there is an uninterrupted flow of water carriers. You have to do at least 10 kilometers to find it despite the heat and fatigue, despite the hunger. Every day the dead on the side of the road are more numerous. Some are not even covered. But the walkers continue like automatons.
- The Doctors Without Borders car carries medicines and water. On board, Doctor Yves Coppieters went to the Munigi camp to take samples because we fear cholera. Doctor Yves Coppieters: "We are in an endemic region of cholera, in addition in the dry season. So we strongly suspect this disease which would be a disaster in this type of camp, with such promiscuity".
- In Munigi the situation of tens of thousands of refugees has become dramatic. Between the dead, the dying, the sick with dehydration, dysentery, starvation, the doctors and nurses of the dispensary are overwhelmed. The line is endless, the weakest are on the ground. Without water and in the state of exhaustion in which these families find themselves, it is an unprecedented humanitarian disaster that looms in the days and even in the hours to come.
