Abstract
- A moving moment in tribute to the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup: today, at the site of the Vélodrome d'Hiver in Paris, François Mitterrand inaugurated a monument in memory of the Jewish victims deported to German concentration camps on the orders of the Vichy police. It was 50 years ago.
- Panic among Rwandan refugees in the face of mortar fire from the Patriotic Front, which today has left more than 80 dead on the Zairian border. This evening, the shelling even reached Goma airport in Zaire, a humanitarian base for Operation Turquoise. As a result, the UN had to suspend the humanitarian airlift.
- On the ground, the RPF has seized Gisenyi, the last stronghold of government forces in northern Rwanda, and fighting continues. The RPF this evening threatened to enter the humanitarian security zone if leaders of the former regime and regular forces are allowed to do so. This threat was immediately followed by a warning from the French government.
