Abstract
- Rwanda: the fighting to take control of the capital Kigali is still just as violent as the French soldiers continue their mission in the west of the country.
- The French soldiers engaged in Operation Turquoise are deployed in western Rwanda while in the center of the country the fighting for control of the capital Kigali is intensifying.
- Fervor rediscovered yesterday [June 26] in Kigali, the time of a mass in this Tutsi refugee camp. Their prayer was answered with the arrival of the French soldiers. Their obsession: the Hutu militias they accuse of genocide. Their fear: to die of epidemics or disease for lack of medicine, the incessant bombardments on Kigali having prohibited any medical evacuation.
- The airport, closed, could however be reopened today. A respite that would be taken advantage of by the Red Cross.
- The 450 UNAMIR blue helmets who remained in the capital under the bombardments constitute in fact the only hope of the civilians on the spot, still threatened, who are waiting to be treated or moved.
- In any case, the French initiative is well received by UNAMIR headquarters in Kigali. Roméo Dallaire: "Sending troops here is not enough. You still have to send me troops with all their equipment so that they can do the job expected of them".
- Operation Turquoise continues on the eastern border with Zaire. French paratroopers deploy 10-15 kilometers wide inland continue their needs assessment.
- This evening 1,300 soldiers will be hard at work and tomorrow [June 28] the two field hospitals will be set up.
