Abstract
- The rest of Operation Turquoise in Rwanda is still proceeding without incident. French patrols are stepping up their incursions into the country, notably through the South-West. The French general staff is now installed in Goma in the North-West. Our special envoys are on site. They went today to Nyundo, in the north, to a refugee camp.
- Here in Nyundo, the school was devolved to 400 Hutu refugees fleeing the massacres around Kigali.
- First contacts, first estimates of food aid to be provided in the first emergency. For the time being, only NGOs such as the Red Cross provide assistance to refugees.
- Tomorrow [June 27] too, the French soldiers will continue to penetrate even further into Rwandan territory. A mission: to find refugees to rescue. An imperative: avoid at all costs the slightest incident with the various forces present.
- Humanitarian aid has still not arrived here at Goma airport, on the Rwandan border. But 40 tonnes of food and medicine are expected on Monday [June 27] or Tuesday [June 28]. They should then be distributed as needs for Rwandan refugees are assessed.
- Several refugee camps are placed under the protection of French soldiers. In the south-west of the country, paratroopers dismantle Hutu barricades and explain to the population the true meaning of their mission. As for example in the camp of Nyarushishi.
- In Nyarushishi camp, vital food aid comes from the sky, brought by the French army. Here 8,000 Tutsi are trying to survive. Many women and children. It's a race to eat.
- These refugees are the survivors of a large-scale massacre that took place in recent weeks in southwestern Rwanda. Of the 55,000 Tutsi in the Cyangugu region, 20 to 25,000 were reportedly killed by Hutu extremists. The others fled to Zaire.
- Those who survive today in Nyarushishi camp face malnutrition, malaria and dysentery.
- This morning, a mass was said by a Tutsi priest.
