Abstract
- In Rwanda very violent fighting shook the capital today. The government had to flee under pressure from the rebels. The massacres are increasing, children are often the victims. The Secretary-General of the United Nations has declared himself ready to intervene militarily if he has armored vehicles on site.
- During the last 48 hours, the main victims of this merciless war have been children. Hutu militiamen have in fact invaded orphanages run by priests and have carried out real massacres.
- At this very moment, the center of Kigali, still in the hands of government forces, is the scene of heavy bombing. Shells fell only meters from the hospital.
- The rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front are tightening their grip around the town of Gitarama, where the provisional government had taken refuge. Faced with the fighting, part of the government fled the city to go to Gisenyi, the ethnic capital of the majority Hutu.
- According to Major Jean-Guy Plante, UN spokesperson, "There are approximately between 9 and 12,000 refugees who are under the direct protection of the United Nations who should be evacuated".
- The Swiss refused today by referendum to provide peacekeepers to the UN for peacekeeping operations. The project planned to place 600 soldiers at the disposal of the United Nations. It was rejected by 57% of the population.
