Abstract
- The next Rwandan bloodbath is expected in Kigali, the capital surrounded by Tutsi rebels. More deaths still to come. Deaths that will be added to the 200,000 already victims of this ethnic conflict.
- Day after day, Rwanda sinks into horror. Again yesterday [May 15], all day, artillery duels claimed new victims.
- And according to African diplomats, the rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front are preparing for new offensives against the government army. The RPF militiamen, who control the North and East of the country, could very soon launch the final assault on the capital Kigali.
- 200,000 Rwandans were killed, 500,000 others fled to neighboring countries.
- For its part, the UN Security Council should vote this week to send additional blue helmets to meet the considerable humanitarian needs. The humanitarian mission failing to put an end to the killings.
- Bernard Kouchner, who arrived in Kigali at night by the northern route, tries with the support of Boutros Boutros-Ghali and the peacekeepers to open a humanitarian corridor to evacuate civilians, especially orphan children.
- But yesterday [May 15], after traveling outside the capital to meet with the government, his convoy was fired upon by militiamen who were over-excited and left to their own devices. Shots that did not cause injuries.
