Abstract
- In Rwanda the carnage continues. Government forces and Patriotic Front rebels have been battling for more than a month for control of the capital Kigali. Heavy fighting that left nearly 200,000 dead. The UN is struggling to enforce a ceasefire.
- Kigali besieged: in streets deserted by the inhabitants, shells rain down. The battle between RPF rebels and government forces is raging. She has not given respite to the Rwandan capital since April 6.
- According to the UNHCR, the fighting and massacres left nearly 200,000 dead. 400 Blue Helmets watch helplessly. On their roads, always the same scenes: exodus and death.
- Faced with the extent of the disaster, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Secretary General of the United Nations, proposed a new UN operation. It should be 5,500 strong and would deploy for strictly humanitarian reasons. The question has been under discussion since Wednesday [May 11] in the UN Security Council.
