Abstract
- In Rwanda the battle for control of the capital Kigali continues. Five weeks of heavy fighting between Patriotic Front rebels and government forces have left nearly 200,000 dead and hundreds of thousands of refugees. The UN is looking for a solution but it is a long time coming.
- Kigali besieged: in streets deserted by the inhabitants, shells rain down. The battle between RPF rebels and government forces is raging. She has not given respite to the Rwandan capital since April 6.
- According to the UNHCR, the fighting and massacres left nearly 200,000 dead. 400 Blue Helmets watch helplessly. On their roads, always the same scenes: exodus and death.
- Faced with the extent of the disaster, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Secretary General of the United Nations, proposed a new UN operation. It should be 5,500 strong and would deploy for strictly humanitarian reasons. The question has been under discussion since Wednesday [May 11] in the UN Security Council.
