- The desperate exodus of several hundred thousand people from Rwanda. From now on the bloody combats extend to all the country.
- In the center of Kigali, the fighting is still raging: almost uninterrupted rain of mortars. Further on, the side of the road is strewn with corpses. According to the ICRC, there are already tens of thousands of victims. And since yesterday [April 18], the fighting has spread to the rest of the country.
- Everywhere the same images of exodus. Long processions of refugees, Hutu or Tutsi, fleeing the bombardments. According to the ICRC, there are thousands of people trying to reach neighboring Burundi every day. But at the border, only displaced Burundians can return. The Rwandans are all turned back.
- Since the beginning of the clashes, the blue helmets of the United Nations have watched helplessly the massacres perpetrated by the Hutu or the Tutsi rebels. Yesterday [April 18] the Belgian UN soldiers, who returned to Belgium, tore their blue berets. A Belgian soldier: "Sometimes 15 meters from us, there were people who were being massacred with machetes and we couldn't do anything".
- Yesterday [April 18], the UN said it would not abandon Rwanda.
