Abstract
- Situation still very confused also in Rwanda, in particular in the capital Kigali. The massacres between Hutu and Tutsi continue.
- This afternoon, as the last Belgian peacekeepers were preparing to leave the country, shells fell on the airport.
- Before leaving Rwanda, the Belgians multiplied evacuations today. Each time, the soldiers are very tense. Feverish, even terrified expatriates. And there is reason: this morning, one of their convoys was taken under fire. The response was immediate. Luckily there were no injuries.
- But the Belgians, in recent hours, have had to take more and more risks. All foreigners in the capital have been bailed out. There are only some left outside of Kigali.
- The soldiers will also discover completely panicked inhabitants: hundreds of Tutsi refugees are calling for help. A black man calls out to a Belgian soldier: "For three days, there have already been corpses in there! There are a lot of wounded! There are 300 people, men, women, old people…".
- On several occasions already, their village has been attacked by bands of Hutu. But the Belgians will not be able to do anything for them: only the 18 foreigners who worked in the psychiatric hospital will be evacuated. These are the orders.
- In all likelihood, the Belgian and French soldiers should leave Rwanda by tomorrow [April 15]. The RPF's ultimatum will indeed have expired. The capital will then be delivered to the armed bands. The Tutsi rebels are also in the city. Their leader has also affirmed that he had absolutely no intention of negotiating any ceasefire.
