Abstract
- The situation in Rwanda now: 250 people arrived yesterday evening at Roissy from Kigali and among them, 94 orphans. No more French people on site, except those who did not want to leave.
- The French paratroopers will hand over control of the evacuation of foreigners to the Belgians. The French Embassy has been closed. The Interim Government of Rwanda has left its headquarters and fighting has resumed with renewed vigor in Kigali.
- Before, they were maybe neighbours, maybe friends, but that was before. Before the murder of Hutu President Habyarimana, before bands of Hutu backed by the regular army meted out their revenge in a bloodbath.
- Today the bodies are piled up in dump trucks to be thrown into mass graves. Unfortunately, they will not be the last: the rebel forces of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, with a Tutsi majority, are now at the gates of Kigali. They come to reinforce one of their battalions already quartered in the city. This morning, Kigali was once again buzzing with automatic weapon fire. The RPF claims to have sent 4,000 men to attack the capital. Announced objective: to depose the government and restore public order.
- Before this new battle, most Westerners were evacuated with the exception of 1,200 Belgians. Almost all of the French have left but we still have no news of three military aid workers. The Ministry of Cooperation affirmed yesterday [April 11] to fear the worst.
- The worst may be yet to come for the people of Kigali: this morning, panic engulfed the city after the government left its headquarters for an unknown destination.
- Calls for a truce launched by the UN are ignored. France and Belgium refrain from intervening. Most humanitarian organizations have left the country. Rwandan civilians no longer have any recourse against armed gangs.
