Abstract
- The Presidents of Burundi and Rwanda killed last night [April 6] in what is most likely an attack. Their plane crashed on landing in Kigali. They were returning from a regional summit in Tanzania. A summit devoted to ethnic crises, to the war between Hutu and Tutsi in these two countries. This morning, we fight in the Rwandan capital.
- The President of Rwanda, Habyarimana, and his colleague from Burundi, Ntaryamira, perished together. They were returning from Tanzania after a summit on the ethnic war between the two countries. The plane carrying them was going to land last night [April 6] in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Suddenly the device exploded, it had just been hit by rocket fire.
- In New York, at the United Nations Security Council, a minute of silence was observed after an appeal for calm to the populations of the two countries. The representative of Rwanda is formal: "What happened, he says, is not an accident, it is an assassination".
- This attack now risks rekindling the conflict between the two rival ethnic groups: the Hutu, the majority in Burundi and Rwanda. And on each side, a strong frustrated Tutsi minority. The result: Periodically terrible tribal atrocities.
- At any time, these hilly countries can flare up again. As in recent months: massacres responded to massacres and thousands of people had to flee. In October, an attempted coup claimed the life of its President.
- French soldiers are on alert in the Central African Republic. And in Kigali, we heard shots this morning.
